Have fun in the SVSU kitchen! You will learn to make and wrap different Chinese appetizers including won ton dumplings, egg rolls, crab cheese and more. You’ll also be able to sample your creations and even learn how to use chop sticks. Instructor: Kelly VanConett Executive Chef, SVSU So You Want to be President? (02) Even United States Presidents started out as regular kids! You will learn how the political process works, who is eligible to run, and how to get nominated for the position. We will also discuss what party platforms you might represent, and you will get to write your own “running for president” campaign speech. Instructor: John Kaczyinski Department of Political Science, SVSU Staying Fit and Fabulous (03) Whether young or old, your health is so important. You’ll learn all about exercise and fitness through a guided tour of SVSU’s new high-tech fitness lab. Body composition, electrocardiograms, blood pressure, and fitness measures are just some of the topics we’ll explore. Instructor: Jeremy Knous Department of Kinesiology, SVSU CSI: SVSU (04) As a “grandteam” you’ll work together to solve crimes using fingerprint analysis, ink chromatography and serology (blood analysis). Is your team up for the challenge? Instructor: Lori Hall SVSU Regional Mathematics & Science Center Dazzling Experiments with Dry Ice (05) What is the difference between DRY ice and WET ice? Have fun finding out what happens when experimenting with dry ice and fire, bubbles, balloons, cabbage, coins, soap and other oddities. (06) Hands-on games and activities that help you see how much fun mathematics can be! Instructor: Jonathon Gould Department of Teacher Education, SVSU Harry Potter’sMagic (07) Take a look at Harry’s journey through video clips and selected story excerpts and compare his life journey to yours. You will craft your own “magic wand” out of materials provided that best represents you. The class will be led by Gina Burkart an internationally known author on the subject of Harry Potter. Instructor: Gina Burkart English Department, SVSU Race Car Fever (08) Learn about the SVSU Cardinal Formula Racing Team and how SVSU students build a race car from the ground up each year with chemists and engineers working together from concept to competition. We will also tour Pioneer Hall and see the race shop, machine workshop, foundry, and labs. Instructors: Bruce Hart, Independent Testing Laboratory Brooks Byam and Robert Tuttle, Department of Mechanical Engineering, SVSU Robotics 101 (09) Each team of camp engineers will design and create a robot with working motors and sensors using computer software from LEGO. You will program your robot model using simple machines including gears, levers and pulleys. Instructor: Jessica VanBevern. SVSU Regional Mathematics & Science Center Art at the Museum (10) This class will begin with a tour of the amazing Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum for inspiration. Then, as a grandparent/child team you will get creative and make a two dimensional stamped picture frame. Instructor: Andrea Ondish Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum Michigan Rock & Roll Legends (11) Learn about Michigan musicians who have made significant contributions to Rock and Roll and how the power of their music affects our lives. The class will include plenty of music with many well known bands including The Supremes, Stevie Wonder and Grand Funk Railroad. Instructor: Gary (Dr. J) Johnson OLLI Member & Retired School Teacher Cell Biology Can Be Yummy (12) Everything is made of cells, but do you know the various components? You will learn about the parts of a cell and create your very own edible cell using cookies and candy. Instructor: Tamara Barrientos SVSU Regional Mathematics & Science Center Geometry Can Be Fun (13) Do geometry-proofs and formulas seem boring to you? Come create a tessellation, play with tangrams, pentominoes and AngLegs™, and use miras for a new view. Geometry can be current and exciting! Butterflies Bugs & Beetles (14) Why do crickets chirp? Why do mosquitoes buzz in your ear? Learn this and other interesting facts about insects while viewing them under microscopes in the SVSU Biology lab. Instructor: David Stanton Department of Biology, SVSU Private Investigation 101 (15) Learn what skills you need to become a private investigator and conduct investigations involving missing persons, corporate intelligence, and other fascinating areas. Dr. Joe will also share techniques that will help you become a better observer in your day to day life. Instructor: Joseph Jaksa Department of Criminal Justice, SVSU Sticks & Stones (16) Play the game Sticks and Stones which is based on an Apache game and played at multi-nation celebrations. You’ll collect data, investigate the likelihood of various moves, and use basic concepts of expected value to determine your strategy to win. Instructor: Lisa Johnson SVSU Regional Mathematics & Science Center OrigamiExperience (17 & 18) The art of folding paper began in China during the first century A.D. In this two hour class you will see a variety of folds and make four different creations. This class will help you to hone your geometry, logic, sequencing and motor skills as well as become a folder-teacher yourself. (This class counts as two class selections.) Instructor: Wayne O’Brien OLLI Member From Garbage to Worm Juice (19) We’ll visit the SVSU greenhouse to learn about the process of vermicomposting - using organic waste and worms to create a valuable fertilizer. You will see and learn how you might set up a similar system and do your part to make the world greener and cleaner. Instructor: Ed Meisel Department of Chemistry, SVSU Don’t Scramble the Eggs (20) Your team will be challenged to plan and design your own egg capsule as you compete with other teams to see whose egg can survive the drop. You will learn useful lessons in creative thinking and scientific inquiry. Instructor: David Cline Department of Teacher Education, SVSU Reality Store Workshop Each household only has so much money to spend each month - this is a reality! As a team, you will decide how to spend your monthly allotment which is based on the career you are randomly assigned. You will also be assigned a “life situation” which includes your marital status and whether you have children. Your team will be provided with a checkbook and you will have to make decisions on a variety of expenditures including which car to purchase and how large of a house to buy. Other purchases will include clothing, groceries, utilities, insurance, taxes and education loans. Will you have any money left over at the end of the month for savings? Good Luck!
